Stainless Steel Crowns and The Hall Technique

Stainless steel crowns (SSCs) are preformed metal crowns which have been used in paediatric dentistry since 1950; however, until recently, uptake of use in primary care has been unpopular. This was primarily due to the need to extensively prepare primary teeth which had a significant risk of damage to adjacent teeth as well as the challenge of administering local anaesthetic in a young child. The Hall technique offers an alternative where no or little tooth preparation is required and therefore can be not only a more pleasant procedure for children, but evidence shows that this technique is superior to conventional restorations.

Aims & Objectives

  • Understand the background, mechanism and evidence base for the Hall Technique?
  • Understand the advantages of using the Hall Technique over conventional methods?
  • Understand the technique in providing non-preparatory stainless steel crowns?
  • Understand the indications for using the technique?
  • Understand how to place separators?
  • Understand how to overcome common pitfalls with this technique?
  • Be able to identify simple beginner cases to practice?

This webinar will discuss the evidence and background behind the technique, walk through a case and help identify simple cases for beginner dentists and dental therapists so that they can add this straightforward and effective technique into their armamentarium for managing caries in children.
