Clinical Case: Is it possible to do more with less? Cracking the chameleon effect
Using 3M™ Filtek™ Easy Match Universal Restorative.
Using 3M™ Filtek™ Easy Match and 3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Plus Adhesive
58-year-old female patient with old restorations in the upper central incisors. The wear of the composite makes the clinical crown look shorter than aesthetically appropriate, so the patient comes to the office to make new restorations to restore the teeth to their normal proportions.
The challenge: The central incisors are the teeth with the greatest aesthetic demand. It is very common to find an anatomy that forces us to use composites of different opacities, but in this case a single shade was enough to meet the patient’s aesthetic expectations.

Pre-op intraoral situation in occlusion.
Shade selection.
With 3M™ Filtek™ Easy Match, there is no need to use any color guide, but since it was the first time I used this composite, I decided to make a guide with the material itself to select the best option from the three available colors (Warm, Natural and Bright).
Selected shade.
Finally, the selected shade was A3 according to VITA classical A1-D4® shade guide, which corresponds to 3M™ Filtek™ Easy Match Natural shade.
Color test.
After removing old restorations, a small amount of Natural shade 3M™ Filtek™ Easy Match was placed with no etching and bonding application, just to check the final shade.
Absolute isolation with rubber dam.
Dental floss ligatures help keeping the rubber dam in place. Tooth structure is shown after old restorations removal.
Checking the fit of silicon index.
A VPS Putty material was used to copy the anatomy from the wax-up model. Notice the amount of tooth structure missing to be replaced with composite.

In teeth with low translucency and homogeneous color, using this type of simplified composites saves time and makes the procedure much simpler. The aesthetic result satisfied the patient and the teeth once again had harmonious proportions.
